New Motu Proprio of Benedict XVI

APOSTOLIC LETTER
IN THE FORM OF YOUR MOTU
FIDES FOR Doctrinam
OF HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT PP. XVI
WITH WHOM YOU HAVE CHANGED THE APOSTOLIC CONSTITUTION PASTOR BONUS AND MOVES TO THE JURISDICTION OF THE CATECHESIS
THE CONGREGATION FOR THE CLERGY IN THE HOLY COUNCIL
FOR THE PROMOTION OF NEW EVANGELIZATION

Faith needs to be supported by a doctrine capable of enlightening the minds and hearts of believers. The particular historical moment in which we live, marked among other things by a dramatic crisis of faith, requires the assumption of an awareness, to meet the high expectations that arise in the hearts of believers to new questions that challenge the world and the Church. The understanding of faith, therefore, always requires that its contents are expressed in a new language, able to provide hope to those who believe this to those who ask for reason (cf. 1 Pt 3:15).
It 'particular task of the Church to keep alive and effective proclamation of Christ, through the exposition of the doctrine that must nourish faith in the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God made man for us, died and rose for our salvation. It must make him relentlessly through forms and tools, because those who accept and believe the proclamation of the Gospel reborn to new life through baptism.
On the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council , the Church while still reflects the richness of the teaching contained in the documents and find new ways to implement it, you can see the great progress made in recent decades in the catechesis path But that was not free, in the years following the Council, to serious errors in the method and content, which led to a thorough reflection and thus led to the development of some post-conciliar documents that represent the new wealth in the field of catechesis.
The Venerable Servant of God Paul VI wrote, was in the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii nuntiandi : "A way must not be neglected is that of catechetical evangelization. Intelligence, especially that of children and adolescents, need to learn through systematic religious instruction, the basic data, the living content of the truth which God has wished to convey and that the Church has sought to express in an ever richer in the course of its long history "(No. 44: AAS 68 [1976], 34).
By the same token, Blessed John Paul II , at the conclusion of the Synod of Bishops on the Catechesis wrote: "The purpose of catechesis, in the general context of evangelization is to be the teaching and maturation stage, ie time which the Christian, having accepted by faith the person of Jesus Christ as the only Lord and having given complete adherence by sincere conversion of heart, endeavors to know better this Jesus, whom you abandoned "(Apostolic Exhortation . tradendae Catechesis , 20: AAS 71 [1979], 1294).
To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council , my predecessor Blessed convened another Synod of Bishops and, in that context, the Synod Fathers expressed the fervent hope that you would proceed to the preparation of a Catechism for the Universal Church offer a systematic synthesis of faith and morals Council stated that. With the Apostolic Constitution Fidei deposit of 11 October 1992, Blessed John Paul II promulgated theCatechism of the Catholic Church and, with Motu Proprio of 28 June 2005 , I myself have approved and promulgated the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church .
We can not forget other important stages to clarify the nature, methods and goals of catechesis in the process of evangelization. In 1971, the Congregation for the Clergy published the General Catechetical Directory for the purpose of making a first synthesis with respect to the progress made in the various local Churches, who, meanwhile, had realized a catechetical their own path.Following the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church , the same Congregation for the Clergy , in 1997, issued the General Directory for Catechesis , reaffirming the Church's desire that the first stage in the catechetical process is ordinarily dedicated to ensuring the conversion (cf. n . 62).
The Council's teaching and the Magisterium, summing up the great tradition of the Church in this regard, they tied in an increasingly strong Catechesis in the process of evangelization. Catechesis, therefore, represents a significant milestone in the daily life of the Church to proclaim and transmit in a living and effective Word of God, so that this may all, and believers are trained and educated in Christ to build His Body which is the Church (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church , 4 ).
With the Apostolic Letter in the form of Motu Proprio , et Ubicumque always , I set up, September 21, 2010, the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization , which plays "its purpose is stimulating reflection on the themes of the new evangelization, both identifying and promoting ways and means to achieve it '(Article 1 § 2: AAS 102 [2010], 791). In particular, I wanted to give the new Department the task of "promoting the use of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, as essential and complete formulation of the content of the faith to the people of our time" (Article 3, # 5: AAS 102 [2010], 792).
In those circumstances I consider it appropriate that the Department takes in its mission to ensure, on behalf of the Roman Pontiff, the relevant instrument of evangelization that is for the Church Catechesis and catechetical teaching in its various manifestations, in order to achieve more organic and effective pastoral action. This new Pontifical Council will offer local churches and diocesan bishops adequate service in this matter.
Therefore, accepting the unanimous proposal of the Department Heads concerned, I decided to transfer to the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization skills that, in the field of catechesis, the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus , 28 June 1988, was entrusted to the Congregation for the clergy , with the same jurisdiction that so far exercised this congregation in this area and is required by canonical.
Consequently, in the light of the foregoing, having examined everything carefully and have requested the opinion of experts, will establish and decree the following:
Article 1
It repealed the ' art. 94 of the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus , and expertise in the field of catechesis held so far the Congregation for the Clergy is fully transferred to the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization .
Article 2
It is also transferred to the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization "the International Council for Catechesis" established by the Venerable Servant of God Paul VI with a letter dated June 7, 1973. Of the Council shall chair the President of the Council and will make theex officio Secretary of the same Department.
Article 3
Under the powers conferred by this Motu Proprio , the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization :
§ 1. responsible for the promotion of religious formation of the faithful of every age and condition;
§ 2. has power to enact appropriate because the teaching of catechesis is imparted in a convenient according to the constant tradition of the Church;
§ 3. has the task of ensuring that the catechetical formation is properly in accordance with the methods and purposes according to the indications given by the Magisterium of the Church;
§ 4. grants the prescribed approval of the Apostolic See for the catechisms and other writings pertaining to catechetical instruction, with the consent of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith;
§ 5. assists catechetical offices in the Episcopal Conferences, following their initiatives on religious education and having an international character, coordinates activities and possibly offer them the help they need.
Everything I have resolved this Apostolic Letter in the form of Motu Proprio , I order that is observed in all its parts, notwithstanding anything to the contrary even if worthy of particular mention, and contrive to be promulgated by publication in the newspaper " L'Osservatore Roman", entering into force fifteen days after enactment.
Given at Rome, at St. Peter, January 16 of 2013, the eighth of my Pontificate.

Benedictus PP. XVI

UPDATE from a reader: One step at a time said...
On the day for March for Life I was with a group praying at an abortion mill in England. All of a sudden a young lady came quickly out of the mill. She breathed a sigh of relief, took my information leaflets for help and said she was keeping her baby. I noticed that she had the wrist band on. She was actually on the table when she changed her mind. Prayers are powerful. Thank God for these young pro life marchers.

Thoughts on the Two Hitchens....the reality of good and evil

In his book. The Rage Against God, Peter Hitchens make three points which make the book, not new, worth reading.

The first is that those atheists who "hate God" and all religion, including, sadly, his late brother Christopher, do not believe that Christianity makes a difference in the world, or even that altruism is possible.

Peter makes a good case, despite failures, for the goodness which comes out of people who sacrifice their comforts for others, such as the husband or wife, taking care of a very ill or even mentally disturbed mate.

That this altruism is denied reveals a darkness in the heart of the atheist, who does not want to believe that men and women can achieve a holiness or extremely honourable lifestyle.

Connected to this idea, in the book, is the rather simple idea, which I see in Gramsci, who is never mentioned in the book, but responsible for many of the ideas seen in Lenin and Stalin or Lukacs (who I studied in college), and others, that violence and the complete lack of ethics are needed for so-called atheistic regimes to succeed.

Of course, we know that tyranny must be sustained by violence over the desire for freedom, but Hitchens insight that these people choose to be violent, believe totally in violence and do not care if they must perpetrate it should help all those who deny the violence of certain groups today understand that there are really evil people who want to build their lives on violence.

A nice, but simple idea which needs to be applied today....

The third idea which caught my attention and which is stated with clarity in Gramsci, is the "Systematic Malice" of atheistic regimes.

We are facing that malice now in many Western countries.

For those not inclined to read the more meaty and basic sources of these excellent ideas summarized and defined by Hitchens, such as reading Gramsci, this book of his is a good start.

Christians who are naive cannot be the Church Militant.

It is part of our present generations love of so-called progressivism which makes many people not want to admit that there are evil people and they really do hate God and His People.

The sadness of Christopher's passing in 2010 is that he could not come to believe in the reality of goodness.

On Sin and St. Thomas More

Remember, if you help another person sin, you are entering into their sin.

If you cooperate with sin, you are sinning. You are part of the cause of the other person or person's sinning. Remember that silence is consent. This is hard for youth to grasp.

Help your children learn this. Let them follow the example of St. Thomas More in all things. He formed his conscience according to the Scriptures and the Teaching Magisterium of the Church. Formation begins very young.

Blogger Update for January

278 posts for January.

Hmmm, maybe cold weather, snow, and ice are good for evangelizing.

And people say there is no difference between the political parties....

In a video message, Speaker of the House John Boehner roused the crowd when he called abortion "a defining human rights issue of our time. He said, "Because human life is not an economic or political commodity ... no government on Earth has the right to treat it as such."

He also said the GOP would stop abortion funding...

and from Iowa
Lauren Benzing, 18, of Solon, Iowa, who came with 350 others on 13 buses from the Catholic Diocese of Dubuque, was too young to vote last November but, she vows, "as soon as I can (vote), I will support pro-life. But with the march, I feel like I can still make a difference."
About 235 Iowans traveled for more than two days on four buses to attend the march, said Maggie DeWitte, 38, executive director of Iowans for LIFE.
"I think so often people working in the life movement feel like they're all alone out there. This gives them a sense of energy, enthusiasm, unity and resolve," DeWitte said.
Deb Ryan-Purcell, 50, of Des Moines, was invited to the event by her daughter, a senior at Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines.
Micah Purcell, 17, said she wanted her mother to witness all of like-minded people who feel passionately about protecting the lives of unborn children.
"When our parents are gone, we'll be in charge of this country," said Purcell, who is attending her third march. "We're sending a message that this is not OK with us."

And, we have a really excellent Pope.....

Pope Benedict XVI sent them his encouragement by way of his personal Twitter account, @pontifex: "I join all those marching for life from afar, and pray that political leaders will protect the unborn and promote a culture of life," he posted early Friday morning.

A Warning Unheeded and the Enemy is Within

From a Warning to the West by Alexander Solzhenitsyn Harvard, 1978

we did not pay attention..........

You have to understand the nature of communism. The very ideology of communism, all of Lenin's teachings, are that anyone is considered to be a fool who doesn't take what's lying in front of him. If you can take it, take it. If you can attack, attack. But if there's a wall, then go back. And the Communist leaders respect only firmness and have contempt and laugh at persons who continually give in to them. Your people are now saying - and this is the last quotation I am going to give you from the statements of your leaders - "Power, without any attempt at conciliation, will lead to a world conflict." But I would say that power with continual subservience is no power at all.

It is almost a joke now in the western world, in the 20th century, to use words like "good" and "evil." They have become almost old-fashioned concepts, but they are very real and genuine concepts. These are concepts from a sphere which is higher than us. And instead of getting involved in base, petty, shortsighted political calculations and games we have to recognize that the concentration of World Evil and the tremendous force of hatred is there and it's flowing from there throughout the world. And we have to stand up against it and not hasten to give to it, give to it, give to it, everything that it wants to swallow.

For those who asked about Les Mis

I am getting feedback from good Catholics that Les Miserables is a great film. I have not seen it, but here is a review.

Les Miserables

By Joseph McAleer
Catholic News Service

NEW YORK (CNS) -- If your Christmas wish list includes a lavish, big-budget musical crafted in the classic Hollywood manner, then "Les Miserables" (Universal) is just the ticket.

This rousing entertainment offers something for everyone: soaring anthems, tear-jerking romance, thrilling drama -- and a positive portrayal of the Catholic faith.

In fact, this faithful adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel, which was transformed into a worldwide stage sensation by impresario Cameron Mackintosh, is a deeply moral story. Characters rise and fall calling on God for grace and mercy, seeking personal redemption while trying to better the lives of others.

As the central character, ex-convict Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), comes to realize, "To love another person is to see the face of God."

Director Tom Hooper ("The King's Speech") paints with an enormous brush and "Les Miserables" is staged on an epic scale, overstuffed with grand set pieces and hundreds of extras. Hooper's fondness for extreme close-ups heightens the emotional wallop, and will likely send some viewers scrambling for tissues.

The labyrinthine story spans two decades in post-revolutionary France and revolves around three characters: Valjean, who breaks his probation and seeks a fresh start; Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe), obsessed with finding Valjean and bringing him to justice; and the doomed Fantine (Anne Hathaway), who sacrifices everything for the care of her out-of-wedlock daughter, Cosette (Isabelle Allen).

The kindness of a Catholic bishop (Colm Wilkinson) convinces Valjean to amend his life. Over time, he changes his identity, becoming the benevolent mayor of a village and a factory owner. When Fantine is unjustly fired from his factory and forced into a life of prostitution, Valjean steps in, promising the now-dying woman that he will raise Cosette as his own.

Cosette has been living with the Thenardiers (Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter), wicked tavern owners and professional pickpockets. Their collusion with Javert makes for a narrow escape for Valjean.

Years pass, and Cosette has blossomed into a refined young woman (Amanda Seyfried). On a Paris street she meets a young revolutionary, Marius (Eddie Redmayne). It's love at first sight, much to the chagrin of fellow rebel Eponine (Samantha Barks), who happens to be the Thenardiers' daughter.

Can Cosette and Marius' love survive the rising tensions of the mob, as streets are barricaded and weapons drawn? Is Javert closing in on Valjean at long last? "Les Miserables" barrels along to a satisfying climax that is profound in its endorsement of the power of faith.

With little spoken dialogue and 50 songs from composer Claude-Michel Shonberg, and lyricist Herbert Kretzmer, "Les Miserables" is more opera than musical. Fortunately the actors' pipes are up to the challenge, especially Hathaway, whose heartbreaking rendition of the signature tune, "I Dreamed a Dream," is sensational.

The film contains scenes of bloody violence, a prostitution theme, and nongraphic nonmarital sexual activity. The Catholic News Service classification is A-III -- adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
